1905 to 2005
Over one hundred years ago Horace L. Hotchkiss dreamed of staging a golf tournament exclusively for older men. Although many scoffed at the idea, Hotchkiss eventually convinced enough of his friends and acquaintances to admit their age and forget their infirmities and play 36 holes of golf in one day over the hills of Apawamis Golf Club in Rye, New York. That day October 12, 1905 marked the birth of senior golf
After 10 years of expansion and reliance on Apawamis’ generosity it was decided that it was time to formally organize and thus in 1917 the United States Senior Golf Association was created with its primary purpose being to hold an annual tournament on the links of Apawamis Golf Club. It was the first organization organization of its kind in the world.
It wasn’t long before the existence of a seniors’ organization in the United States inspired the founding of similar organizations in Canada, and then Great Britain…
